"August 18, 2011 Monster Storm"
Northwest Missouri

This series of storms is one that will be remembered for quite some time for its hail, crop damage, and structure damage to many communities in Northwest Missouri.   I watched the whole thing unfold from high on a hill just southeast of Evona, Missouri.  As seen in the images below I had a ring side seat to the storm as it passed by just a few miles to my west moving basically from Northwest to Southeast.   At times it looked like it was moving straight south.    I was lucky because I would not have been able to get any such pictures had I been right underneath the storm.  I did get heavy rains and strong winds but nothing like they got in places like Maryville, Sheridan, Stanberry, King City, and other places along that corridor.

As is evident below there were actually multiple storm cells moving out of Nebraska and Iowa into Northwest Missouri.  What I have captured in my images is the first storm cell that moved through and eventually dissipated near the Lawson - Marshall area.  The other storms cells were more long-live and arrived after dark leaving no light for photography.  The cell that is documented below was an isolated cell passing through the area at around 7:30 p.m. CDT while the second round was more of a derecho type storm passing through later at around 9:15 pm. CDT and impacting St. Joseph at around 9:30 p.m. CDT.  It was this second round derecho event that inflicted most of its damage towards the west where the bow echo was at its strongest.

One thing very noticeable to me was that the birds were very active when these storms were approaching.  I could hear several birds chirping as if very excited including some exclusively night birds such as the Whip-poor-will.  They quieted when the storms arrived.

Below are screen captures of satellite and radar data showing the extent of the storms.

Radar Time:  8:17 p.m. Local Daylight Time.      1:17 UT       Screen Capture from Weather Underground

Below are some images that I captured while the event was in progress.  I am located near Evona, Missouri with a view of the storms looking to my north and on around to southwest.

Looking West.  Local time: 7:33 p.m. CDT

Looking Southwest towards King City.  Note the windmills along the horizon at the left.  7:47 p.m. CDT

Wide angle shot looking southwest. 7:51 p.m. CDT

Looking due north towards Albany.  7:55 p.m.  CDT

Looking southwest. 7:54 p.m. CDT

Looking southwest.  Note the greenish color cast to the clouds....probably indicative of hail.
7:56 p.m. CDT

Looking up towards the southwest.  It was clearer to the south allowing valuable (at least to a photographer anyway)
light to shine up under the cloud deck.  7:57 p.m. CDT

Closer view looking southwest.  Greenish color cast persists.   7:59 p.m. CDT

Final shot before heavy rain moved through.  8:02 p.m. CDT
