"Five Planets in One Photograph"
May 2, 2002

On this evening I captured all five of the naked eye planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn) in one photograph.   It took me two photography sessions out under the stars to get this picture accomplished. My first attempt resulted in the evening twilight being over-exposed erasing any trace of Mercury, the closest planet to the sun in the sky at that time. Another problem was that Jupiter was so far away from the other planets that it took my widest angle lenses to include it with the others. The photo above is the best shot that resulted from those two sessions. The photograph was taken south of Albany, Missouri.  Below is another version of this photograph with the planets labeled.
